Coast and ocean

Coastal areas in most parts of the world are undergoing rapid growth. It is estimated that 75 percent of the world population will live within 60 km of the coastline by the year 2025. This means enormous pressure on the resources and sensitive ecosystems in coastal areas and further emphasises the conflict of interest in how this is handled. General systems analysis is used by SSPA to identify interacting factors and issues, and to lead to intersectoral problem resolution, often involving multiple use of resources. SSPA Sweden has extensive experience of projects concerning integrated coastal zone planning and management.

Areas of engagement are for example:

  • Land use planning and natural resources management
  • Sustainable development in coastal areas
  • Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA)
  • Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)
  • Coastal processes and sea defence solutions
  • Spill risk assessment and prevention methods
  • Coastal Hazards management
  • Training and education for sustainable development in coastal areas
  • Fishery safety management
