Armada of windships

Around 3500 BC, ancient Egyptians invented the sailboat. They built ships with masts and sails made out of reeds that could harness the power of the wind. In the research project Oceanbird, funded by the Swedish Transport Administration, SSPA Maritime Centre together with Wallenius Marine and the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm laid the foundation for the technical development needed to realize the concept to adapt this ancient technology to help end the fossil fuel era of shipping and curb the industry's carbon footprint.
