Wind Ship - Best paper award to Sofia Werner of SSPA!

10 Nov 2022
Sofia wins Best Paper in Korea

This week the entire shipbuilding industry in Korea is present to celebrate 70 years of the Society of Naval Architecture in Korea (SNACK). The conference focuses on Smart technology into green ocean.

Sofia Werner received the Best Paper Award for “Wind Ship Research – how science can support the transition to wind powered shipping”, a paper she wrote together with her colleagues Frederik Gerhardt, Vendela Santén, and Christian Finnsgård at SSPA, RISE Research Institutes of Sweden.

Following IMO’s request to reduce green-house gas emissions from shipping, wind propulsion has emerged as a feasible solution. The number of cargo vessels equipped with wind propulsion technology is still low but rapidly increasing. Researchers can play a significant role in accelerating the transition. The paper awarded describes barriers to the uptake of wind propulsion and illustrates how scientific research can overcome them.
