Finalising surveys for the Baltic Motorways of the Sea
The FAMOS (Finalising Surveys for the Baltic Motorways of the Sea) project focuses on knowledge exchange and developing solutions across borders for the safety, efficiency and accuracy of future navigation in the Baltic Sea.
- 15 organisations
- 7 countries around the Baltic Sea
- Private, public and academic sectors involved
- Co-financed by the European Union
- Coordinated by the Swedish Maritime Administration
- Project period: 2014-2020
- Project phases: FAMOS Freja (2014-2016); FAMOS Odin (2016-2018); FAMOS Thor (tentatively planned for 2019-2020)
The FAMOS project encompasses four project activities in which surveying the seafloors for updated depth data plays a central role:
1. Hydrographic surveying and chart production
2. Improving future navigation
3. Surveying infrastructure
4. Data workflow from sounding to chart
Fifteen organisations from seven countries around the Baltic Sea is working together in the project; SSPA Sweden AB, Swedish Maritime Administration, Danish Geodata Agency, Estonian Maritime Administration, Finish Transport Agency, German Federal Agency for Cartography and Geodesy, German Federal Maritime Hydrographic Agency, Helmholtz-Zentrum Potsdam Deutsches GeoForschungsZentrum GFZ, Lantmäteriet, Lithuanian Maritime Safety Administration, Maritime Administration of Latvia, National Land Survey of Finland/Finish Geospatial Research Institute, Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute, Tallinn University of Technology, Technical University of Denmark.
Some of the project objectives are to improve surveying infrastructure, collect updated depth data, increase Under-Keel Clearance (UKC) awareness based on more accurate depths, optimize cargo loading based on accurate UKC calculations, and save fuel based on optimized voyages.
SSPA contributes with knowledge and understanding of how daily traffic and cargo loading are being limited by UKC, and route optimization for fuel consumption based on improved bathymetrics and UKC control.
