Testing and verification of new functions for autonomous ships, using an open-source framework

The development of smart functions for shipping is revolutionising the industry. The trend is to use software to increase the efficiency, safety and environmental aspects of ships. SSPA is invited to speak at the Autonomous Ship Technology Symposium 2017, on 6 - 8 June in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. SSPA will present an open-source framework and show how it is used in the development of new functions for autonomous ships. At SSPA, we supports our clients with hydrodynamic knowledge and tools to make them able to test their smart future functions.

Testing and verification has always been important to the shipping industry, and has been the business of SSPA since its foundation in 1940. SSPAs experts are now taking testing and verification into this new era by developing an open-source framework for development, testing and verification of these new smart functions.

One of SSPA’s experts in simulations and autonomous navigation of ships, Mr. Linus Aldebjer will talk about “An open-source framework for testing and verification”. Linus has as a degree in engineering physics in which he did a master thesis on hardware-in-the-loop simulation of underwater vehicles at Saab Underwater Systems in 2004. He was part of bringing autonomy to the underwater vehicles as responsible for the software in the Saab Sarov, a hybrid ROV/AUV. Linus joined SSPA in 2011, and is now product manager of simulations. In that role he is currently pursuing better ways for simulation tools to aid in the development of new advanced functions in remotely controlled or autonomous ships.

The Autonomous Ship Technology Symposium brings together ship designers, fleet owners, naval architects, classification societies, equipment manufacturers and maritime research organisations to discuss and debate the technological, regulatory and legal developments necessary to make autonomous and unmanned ships a reality.
