Virtual customer attendance for Towing Tank tests
Almost all our customers have travel restrictions due to the Corona pandemic and are not able to attend the model tests on site at SSPA as usual. Our experts investigated the possibilities of a remote participation for our clients to be involved in the model testing without being physically present. SSPA has implemented a live video streaming service enabling our customers to participate while we are performing the Towing Tank tests from wherever they are in real time. This is not only of interest for the yards and shipowners but also for the classification societies attending model tests for the EEDI (Energy Efficiency Design Index) verification of the vessel.

The client receives an invitation to a Microsoft® Teams meeting that they can attend the day of the tests. During the meeting, they are able to see a side view of the ship model in the water, just as if they were present on the carriage. We can provide information about the current test run, for example loading condition, test speed and waiting time. At the same time, the client can give feedback, ask questions or request different camera angles during the meeting as well.

SSPA has implemented a live video streaming service enabling our customers to participate while we are performing tests in the Towing Tank.
Towing tank
The towing tank has many applications, primarily concerning hull and propeller form optimisation for all kinds of ships or energy saving devices with respect to resistance/propulsion. A database containing over 8,000 ship hull forms provides the basis for the result analysis.
Our test facilities
Physical model testing will continue to be an important tool in the process of developing ships and assessing their performance. SSPA has the capability to perform most kinds of model testing in its facilities: the towing tank, the large cavitation tunnel, the seakeeping and manoeuvring basin and combine with computer tests.
Determining the EEDI “minimum propulsion power”, new paper
Recently, SSPA’s experts in seakeeping and ship performance in waves presented a new paper at an international conference, held by RINA (the Royal Institution of Naval Architects). A concise version of the presented paper and the results is available for download. SSPA used the KVLCC2 tanker as a case study and followed the IMO guideline step by step to find the minimum engine size. Our experts used a combination of CFD and model tests.
A fair trial – how to obtain the correct EEDI
IMO recently passed a resolution on the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI). This index is a measure of the amount of carbon dioxide a ship emits in relation to its cargo capacity and speed. A ship’s EEDI value must not exceed the allowable limit set by IMO. SSPA can help derive the hydrodynamic part of the EEDI value for new ships.
